Gluten free food in West Kent

West Kent Clinical Commissioning Group have anounced the decision to stop gluten free foods being available on prescription from September 1st.

Commenting on the news, Healthwatch’s Steve Inett said, “We appreciate that NHS organisations are having to take difficult, and at times unpopular, decisions about services as the NHS strives to continue to be able to provide healthcare for the large majority of our population.

The role of Healthwatch Kent, as the independent public champion, is to ensure people are truly involved and informed about changes to services and that the correct, legal process is followed when these decisions are being made.  Healthwatch Kent has given clear advice to West Kent Clinical Commissioning Group that on this occasion, we don’t feel coeliac patients were properly engaged prior to the formal public consultation.

The advice we gave to the CCG, along with our Best Practice Guides to Engagement and Consultations can be found below. These guides clearly set out the legal obligations and best practice process that should be followed by all NHS and Local Authorities when making significant changes to services and have been written in conjunction with the Consultation Institute.”
