Success for deaf patients at East Kent Hospitals

Image shows a mans hands dialling a number onto a white smartphone.

Imagine you need to book a hospital appointment over the phone. Now imagine having to do that when you are deaf.

When we visited hospitals in East Kent in  December 2017, it was clear that deaf patients struggled to contact the hospitals about their Outpatients appointments. The only option was on the phone.

Since sharing our Accessible Information for all report, East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust (EKHUFT) are now starting trials of a Video Relay Service. The service will enable deaf patients to contact the hospitals via a link on their website.

With the support of Healthwatch Kent, the Hospital will soon be trialling the service with patients.
