Changes to inpatient mental health services
A public consultation has been launched to hear everyone's thoughts about the plans to move the beds to Maidstone.
The proposal follows the Government's promise to eradicate mental health dormitory wards by 2024. They have given NHS organisations money to help achieve this.
The mental health Trust which covers Kent & Medway (the Kent and Medway NHS and Social Care Partnership Trust) has been allocated £12.65 million to replace their last remaining dormitory ward – Ruby Ward, which is based in Medway Maritime Hospital. That's why they are now asking people to share their views on the proposal to relocate Ruby Ward from Medway Maritime Hospital to a new purpose-built unit on KMPT’s Maidstone site (adjacent to Maidstone Hospital).
Ruby Ward currently looks after women over 65, from all over Kent & Medway, who have what is known as ‘functional mental illness’, for example severe depression, schizophrenia or bi-polar disorder.
The proposal outlines plans for new single ensuite rooms which would meet the national target of eradicating all dormitory style wards for mental health patients by 2024.
The consultation will run until midnight on Tuesday 21st September.
